Athlete of the Month – Maggie Miller
It’s that time again already. And again, the choice was easy. This incredible women is a stud in the gym and one of our absolute favorite people in the world. She is incredibly hard working, down to earth and just plain fun to talk to. It’s been an awesome run watching her lose weight, get strong, and discover that she is a fantastic athlete. We had her crazy athletic kids in class and we can now report that they absolutely get a lot of that ability from their mom. Congrats to our friend and Athlete of the Month, Maggie Miller.
What have you accomplished in your life that you’re most proud of?
Raising 3 kids that are happy.
If you could take 3 months off and do whatever you wanted, what would that time look like?
I would live by a lake in Northern Michigan. We vacationed there this past August and fell in love. Being able to wake up and go kayaking, boating and fishing (the kids not me) was the best.
How did you feel before you found TrAk?
I felt crappy. My “fat” pants were tight, I was winded from running to the end of our driveway and I felt like I was a bad example for our kids.
How do you feel now?
I feel great now.
How has TrAk changed your everyday life?
I am much more relaxed and patient, which means everyone in our house is more relaxed and patient.
Goals…personal, professional, family?
Goals…personally- to do good in this world, professionally- not to kill any one, family- raise kind, open minded people
If you were in a band what existing band/group do you see yourself in?
I would be in the Roots. I have ZERO musical talent, cannot find the beat and make up words to songs, but I could hide in the back and play the triangle. Plus, I would meet incredible bands and performers and crack up every night.
Best place to travel that you’ve ever been?
When I finished my second year of medical school, 2 friends and I backpacked through Europe. I cannot believe that my parents let me do this (I was 22yo naive girl from the suburbs), but navigating a map through a foreign city and staying alive for almost 3 weeks was an incredible experience.
What do your kids remind you that’s ok to do?
Play. I think I lost the magical ability to play “pretend” around my late 20s and according to my 6 yo, I play Barbies wrong, but I will play any board game they want, swim with them, and play whirlly ball
What personal failure has helped lead to your ultimate success?
It is not so much a failure, but a risk. I quit my job in January this past year. It was a job I loved, but it was not right for our family. It was an extremely hard decision, but having spent the last summer with my kids, it was the right one.
What’s the craziest thing you’ve seen in the gym?
Lauren drilling Dave with her softball pitching motion at dodge ball. He was scared. [Editor’s Note: Dave wasn’t scared, he was pretending to make Lauren feel empowered.*] [*Dave is said Editor]
What three people [living or dead] would you go camping with next weekend?
I would take 5. My kids and husband and my father-in-law (he died in 2009). He was one of the greatest people I ever met and I am very sorry my kids haven’t known him.
Which sport/activity would you love to do, but are afraid to?
Funniest things you’ve seen your kid do?
My kids are hilarious on a daily basis with the stuff that they do. Last summer we were on vacation and I asked my son (8yo at the time) to fill up the dog’s bowl. We look over and he is getting a sip from it. GROSS!
Sing. I think I have heard this movie about 100 times in the car, but only watched it 5. I love the message of not giving up on your dream. And the music is great.
Best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
Do your best. From my parents.
At what age were you in the best shape of your life?
May 26, 2017. It was the last day of school for my kids! I am working on getting back now!
Words to live by or favorite quote?
“Less is more” by one of the ID doctor’s at Children’s.
What adventure do you plan to have in the future?
My husband and I would love to take the kids out West. They are now avid travelers and we can make it through security without causing a back-up!
Favorite book and why?
Mindset by Carol Dweck. It has changed the way I think about things and hopefully how I raise my kids.
Something interesting we don’t know about you?
We lived in Dallas for a year and it made me into a snob about good Mexican food now
What do you like most about being apart of the TrAk Family?
Meeting different people that I would have never met before.
Biggest accomplishment at the gym?
Showing up even when there are burpees on the work-out.
