We live in a society that expects results fast, where we’re annoyed if our websites don’t load in five seconds or if our food doesn’t come fast enough. We’re always in a hurry, and unfortunately we apply it to our health too. Many people confuse getting healthy as something that’ll happen overnight.
Unfortunately, you’re not going to see a six pack in the mirror after two sets of crunches or maybe even after two hundred sets, depending on if you eat like an adult. Getting healthy takes time, dedication, and especially patience. If you’re not willing to set aside a part of your day to make a change, you’re not going to see any results.
The other problem with people wanting to get healthy, is that their idea of what’s healthy isn’t always accurate. The tan, skinny models who grace the covers of fitness magazines aren’t realistic expectations for people who are trying to make a significant change in their lifestyle. This goes for the guys too. The 25 year-old kid with the hairless shredded abs on that show your wife watches on ABC isn’t real either.
Getting healthy should be about gaining confidence and feeling stronger and better about yourself, not matching a certain body image. (Please read that again. Okay, now again. Just to be sure.)

It’s difficult to let go of our fixation with diets that promise to make you shed weight like crazy without having to give up your excess quantities of your favorite junk foods. Many of us aren’t big on change, and altering the food you eat can be really difficult. One of the keys to getting healthy and fit, however, is nutrition. What you put into your body is essentially fuel to help you move throughout the day. If you continue to eat junk, you’re not going to function very well.
Most diets don’t work because they’re created as a general plan for everyone. They don’t take you personally into account, and that makes all the difference. Where exactly are you now, and where exactly do you want to go? What are your specific goals?
No matter what your goals are, you need to have a solid nutrition plan behind them, one that’s tailored to you and what you want to achieve. A low calorie or super low carb diet isn’t going to give you any benefit if you’re training for a marathon.

Working out is can help you feel healthier and accomplished, but doing the right workout for your goals can accelerate your change and most importantly make it sustainable.
Don’t buy into the exercise hype. Working out in the dark with someone screaming at you to push harder isn’t going to make you be the best you can be. Sure, you might see some results up front, but when you get tired of the screaming and you stop going to the gym, what then? No one is going to call and ask why you didn’t show up today, they’re just going to fill your spot with the next person who walks through the door.
If you want to truly dedicate yourself to getting healthy, find a gym and a coach with a plan. Having a coach is the most important determiner to success. Successful people in all walks of life utilize the knowledge and accountability of personal coaches. We’ve all had success our entire lives through the mentoring of teachers and coaches. Why is fitness any different? We need the help of a coach or an expert, not a class. If you’ve gotten your plan together from an Instagram model that you’ve never spoken to and doesn’t know you, chances are it’s not going to work very well.
If you’re completely new to working out, jumping into intense fitness classes can put you at a higher risk of burning out or even getting hurt. Part of a great workout is understanding how to move correctly so you can get the most out of the exercise while limiting risk. Rather than sidelining yourself and delaying reaching your goal, working with an experienced coach can help you be your best and achieve more. The effort that you put into a workout will go so much farther if you work with someone who can help you reach your goals.
