October AOM – Marissa Pappas

We give you the October Athlete of the Month … Marissa Pappas.

What have you accomplished in your life that you’re most proud of?

My work as an attorney for the City of Akron. I try not to forget how lucky I am to have a career I truly enjoy.

If you could take 3 months off and do whatever you wanted, what would that time look like?

If money was no object, I would travel the entire time to places I’ve never been. Realistically I’d probably do another house project. I always have some renovation happening at my house.

If you were in a band, what existing band/group do you see yourself in?

I couldn’t be any less qualified to be in a band. With that being said, anyone that’s been in the gym with me knows I always request 90’s rap. Maybe I could be a hype person in the background that doesn’t really have to do much?

Favorite place to travel to?

Anywhere with a beach and good company. I’ve visited all over the Caribbean. Grand Cayman is a personal favorite.

What personal failure has helped lead to your ultimate success?

I don’t think I’ve reached my ultimate success yet.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve seen in the gym?

The Murph. I’ve never done anything like that before. Very cool.

What three people [living or dead] would you go camping with next weekend?

I’m switching this to dinner and 4 people. Answer: all 4 of my grandparents.

Which sport/activity would you love to do, but are afraid to?

Skydive. It would be so cool, but heights and I don’t get along. I had a hard time stepping out onto the glass ledge at the Sears Tower. So jumping out of a plane is unlikely.

Favorite movie?

I love movies. The first two that came to mind were Animal House and Overboard.

Best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

Dave (definitely not James) telling me to get better shoes and lifters. Game changers.

At what age were you in the best shape of your life?

Ask me again in one year.

Goals … personal, professional, family?

To be happy. I’ve always made decisions based on that simple goal. I wake up every morning and go to a job I love with people I love in a city I love and go home to the best friends and family (that I also love).

Words to live by or favorite quote?

“Own your shit.” Pardon the language. My friends and I say this to each other when someone is making excuses and needs a little tough love. No one is perfect — own your shortcomings, but handle your business.

What adventure do you plan to have in the future?

I’m going to Greece next year with a big group of family. It will be an amazing trip.

Favorite book and why?

Law school somewhat ruined reading for me. After being glued to textbooks the size of 45-lb. plates for three years, it stopped being a leisure activity. These days I pretty much only read when I’m on an airplane or a beach. I haven’t completely given up hope though. I still have the stack of I’m-going-to-read-you-someday books.

Something interesting we don’t know about you?

I’ve never had coffee. Not even a sip.

What do you like most about being a part of the TrAk Family?

That it is just that — a family. It’s an absolute joy to be surrounded by such awesome people every day.

Biggest accomplishment at the gym?

At the risk of sounding lame … I think my biggest accomplishment was simply showing up. I’ve avoided places like TrAk my entire life. I always worked out alone, hood up, headphones in (I know this is shocking everyone), not really knowing what I was doing or what my goals were. I probably took the biggest step when I let Glynis, Julie, and Joy convince me to step through the door. I’m so glad I did because I look forward to it every day. I’m excited to see what the future holds.
